Greetings WSBCC Members !!!

I am touching base with another "Message from the Vice President" to keep you engaged with your Winston Salem Black Chamber of Commerce (WSBCC). First, let me apologize for an oversight on my part in the last communication from me. I failed to mention the New Members Orientation that Donna Jones hosted on 6/226/2019 at her State Farm offices. Our Membership Chair Valerie Benton Smith did an excellent job in articulating some of the benefits of being a WSBCC member.

Since my last communication we (the leadership team) have been busy moving some crucial initiatives forward. Among those are:

  1. the development of a comprehensive business plan that will be a compass to guide our organization for the next 1-3 years

  2.  strengthening our partnerships with others in the "EcoSystem" here in the Triad (check out our partners tab on the website to find out who some of them are)

  3.  continuing to develop our relationship with the US Black Chamber of Commerce (our President Randon Pender attended the annual conference in Maryland last month and came back with crucial information and networking opportunities)

  4.  a review of our current By-Laws in building our infrastructure (new committees, new Board members)

  5. Announcing an opportunity for new Board members (4) to be reviewed at our Members only meeting tomorrow 9/10/2019 at Hickory Tavern from 6:30p-8:00p (thanks to Cynthia Jeffries, Mo Redd & George Redd who agreed to be on the Nominating Committee)

  6. A proactive approach to increasing awareness of our new website and the new benefits that come with being a paid member

  7.  Working on a retreat for current and new Board members that will include orientation and re-orientation for existing Board members

All that being mentioned, we still want to hear more from YOU about how we can better meet your needs and expectations when it comes to what you need to be successful as a business person !!!

We realize that "one size does not fit all". However, we also know that there are some fundamental needs that we all have such as

  • funding opportunities

  • grant opportunities

  • training opportunities

  • networking opportunities

  • discount opportunities

  • resource opportunities (human and material)

  • marketing opportunities

  • counseling opportunities

All of the above mentioned needs are part of the benefits that are mentioned on the website and currently being implemented. I encourage you to take advantage of them as a paid member.

We realize that you probably can't make every monthly meeting (the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30p at the Enterprise Center on MLK Jr. Drive), but we hope that you will put the meeting on your calendar and be willing to be more involved in helping us all achieve "the next level" that we all are seeking in our entrepreneurial pursuits !!!

I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow evening at our Members Only meeting at Hickory Tavern from 6:30p-8:00p. (Thanks to Gloria Hairston and Andrew Lindsey for working the logistics out). Please confirm with Gloria (or me) if you will be attending so we have a good headcount for the meal that the WSBCC is coordinating. Thanks for your continued support. Let me know if you have any questions or comments. We appreciate you !!!

Calvin

PS-Many thanks to the Top Teens who volunteered to assist the WSBCC at last weekend's Union Station Grand Re-Opening. They did an outstanding job !!!

Happy Monday Everyone !!!

It has been a couple of months since I last sent out the "Message from the WSBCC Vice President" and I apologize for the delay. First let me welcome the newest members to our Team !!! We appreciate your investing your time and money to be a part of the Winston Salem Black Chamber of Commerce. It is the intention of the leadership team of the WSBCC to make it a fruitful and rewarding relationship. I want to stress the word relationship. Relationships are ideally two-way. We (the leadership team) will continue providing opportunities for our members (and the community at large) to network, have increased opportunities to increase business, have access to training opportunities, and (with the help of our new and improved website) be a marketing tool to get the word out to the community that you are willing and able to meet their needs.

Our monthly meetings (the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30p at the Enterprise Center in Winston Salem on MLK Jr. Drive unless otherwise noted) are an excellent place to get to meet other members, share about the business you are involved in, and Build Relationships for future business opportunities.

In this past May, we had a "Mixer" in collaboration with the City of Winston Salem, the Enterprise Center, the Winston Salem Chamber of Commerce, and the Forsyth Tech Small Business Center that was outstanding !!! It was well attended, we had an opportunity to learn some things and I believe the Mayor of Winston Salem attended as well.

In June, we participated in the Juneteenth Celebration at Innovation Quarter. It was another event that was well attended had great networking opportunities, and had entertainment and something for all ages. Kudos to Cheryl Harry for facilitating such a fantastic experience for the community.

In July, we had Carol Davis, the Executive Director for the S.G. Atkins Community Development Corporation as our guest. Carol did a magnificent job in articulating what she and her team is doing to make a positive difference in the community. Carol also took questions that touched on financing for businesses, marketing, and the importance of being prepared for opportunities that present themselves.

Tomorrow (8/13/2019) we will be collaborating with ACCESS at their location at Bailey Park in downtown Winston Salem for our monthly meeting. It will begin promptly at 6:30p. Parking should not be a problem and there will be refreshments. I encourage you to stop by and hear some powerful information that can help you grow your business and learn about potential new opportunities.

Next, I STRONGLY encourage you to visit our new and much improved website. It continues to offer a wealth of information regarding current members, benefits of being a member, who our partners are, great photos and info from past events you may have missed, and opportunities for you to give us feedback about how to better meet your needs. If you don't tell us how will we know ?

Finally, please consider being involved with the Winston Salem Black Chamber of Commerce in more than just a member role. We are always seeking committed, visionary people to help with our committees, our events, and assisting our members. You can reach out to me directly or reach out to one of the leadership team (Randon, Andrew, Gloria, Cynthia or Valerie).

We appreciate you and all that you do to make our communities a better place. Continued success in your endeavors and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow at Bailey Park at 6:30p

All the best,

Calvin

Happy Friday Everyone !!!

This communication is the first "monthly message from the WSBCC Vice President". I will communicate with members once a month with updates, feedback, and suggestions designed specifically for WSBCC members in good standing.

It is an honor and privilege to be a part of a team of people who are passionate and committed to success for our businesses, success for our families, success for our communities and success for each other as individuals. Randon, Andrew, Gloria, Cynthia, Valerie and myself (all volunteers) want to continue the growth and success of the Winston Salem Black Chamber of Commerce and each of you are essential to helping us be successful !!!

It has been two months since my last communication. In that email I asked each of you for ideas and suggestions to help us improve. Thank you Mo Redd and Charmon Baker for responding. Your feedback has been noted and I will contact you regarding the implementation of those suggestions and thoughts. For others, please take time to let me know what you think about how we (WSBCC) can better meet your business needs as members.

I am happy to report that the WSBCC has a new live website. The address is www.wsbcc.org. Please review it and utilize it. The website has information on our history, current leadership team, services offered, membership benefits, membership applications, and a listing of partners and other resources available to you as paid members. I encourage you to take advantage of what is offered !!! You can subscribe and receive updates regarding upcoming events, regular monthly meetings (normally the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30p at the Enterprise Center on MLK Jr. Drive in Winston Salem), and special events.

In addition, the directory has all members listed. There is a need for each member to provide either a logo or a photo. If you have not provided either of those yet, please do so asap. You can send it to me or to Dancing Grass Studios. If we do not have either a photo or logo, we will insert the new WSBCC logo until we receive what is needed.

Some upcoming events include our regular meeting on Tuesday 6/11/2019 at 6:30p (with some special guests attending) and participation (with other community partners) at the annual Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday 6/22/2019. Check out the website for more details.

Our Program/Events Chair Gloria and I have had discussion regarding additional programming and events between now and 4/2020. I will provide updates in each of my monthly messages to keep you informed and engaged. Please feel free to reach out to me directly (my contact info is in my signature line) should you have any questions, comments, or concerns. Thanks again for your continued support. Have a great weekend !!!

All the best,

Calvin
